The clip chosen for this project is from “Kiki’s Delivery Service” which was produced in 1989 by director Hayao Miyazaki. This project was created by taking many notes from the past two months in December 2021 and January 2022. Voice memos and video recordings of playing the piano were used to put ideas down and create distinct themes for Kiki, Granny, Tombo, and Kiki’s magic theme. The instrumentation for this composition includes flutes, clarinet, upright pianos, cellos, violins, double bass, percussion, brass instruments, synthesizers, and vocals. The percussion used in this composition consists of bells, timpani, marimba, and a Logic Pro X drum kit. Trombone, tuba, and brass ensembles were used. Having this wide range of instruments brought a creative and interesting sound to the composition. This song was produced using Logic Pro X. Equipment used in this project incorporates the Novation impulse 46 keyboard, MacBook Pro, mobile phone for vocal recording, and a teenage engineering OP-1. Utilizing professional audio plugins such as BBC Symphony Orchestra for a clean and distinct orchestral sound proved to be beneficial.

Logic Pro Session. Here we can see the different markers and professional layout for an effective soundtrack and composition. The different colors represent different types of instrumentation.

BPM Changes. In this image we can see that the blue line at the top of the page (representing the BPM of the track) is changing very often. The BPM increase from 7:13 to 8:58 coincides with the pace of the clip getting more stressful and uncertain. This allows for a more fluid experience when the audience is watching the film.
